Abstract

By the end of the 1990s, the public sector served 85% of the educational system's enrollment, while the remaining 15% was served by the private sector. So far in the new century, the panorama has changed substantially. The coverage of the private sector in 2011 grew 68% compared to 2000, increasing by 1,057 students at the expense of the growing drop in enrollment in state schools. he trend towards privatization in education also has other expressions Between 2000 and 2011, private investment in education rose from 6,683 million nuevos soles to 14,057 million, representing 2.8% of GDP, a figure similar to that of the public budget (S/14,551 million, or 3% of GDP). In Lima, 66.7% of its educational centers are private, concentrating 49% of enrollment; Arequipa, with 57.3% of private educational centers, has the highest percentage of private enrollment in the country: 50.1%.
