The objective of the essay is to illustrate one methodology for teaching History of Architecture is known as “modern critic method” The method, which is specifically aimed at studying historical buildings, is equally effective in critically analyzing modern or contemporary architecture. It was elaborated more than a century ago by Gustavo Giovannoni. It aims at training an «integral» architect, a complete and cultured professional figure, who encompasses the technical skills ofan engincer, the expressive capacities and sensitivity of an artist. Thereby architects acquire the appropriate training that allows them to simultaneously grasp the creative, design and (likewise important) executive processes used in buildings of the past. It is still a common belief that historica architectural knowledge strengthens awareness of the present and helps one in making conscious and responsible choices while exercising a profesion as architect. The «critical method» is at the root of widespread Italian sensitivity towards the problems of the history of architecture and care for the building site as such. This sensitivity has generated, within the Italian culture of architecture, an everlasting bond between history (recognized with complete disciplinary independence) and architectural restoration.
