Abstract

Through the encounters of the formal and the informal in the city, Peruvian modernity has set the basis for the new architecture and urbanism for the next 100 years. Particularly, in the architecture of collective housing, these encounters expose the social, political, economic conflicts, and ideals of the population integrating them into the social space, territory, and material culture. This hybrid modernity has embraced, merged, and negotiated with two opposing movements, the western and the local, which reveals its multiple fisures, tensions, and singularities in all its cultural expressions. This exhibition reviews the process of the cities' absorption of modernity, in which two supposedly opposite
worlds have merged into the architecture and the city, revealing its key moments and driving ideas.
