The Uruguayan experience in selfconstruction by housing cooperatives has had an impact in several Latin American countries. This article summarizes the changes in this production system since the adoption of the Housing Law in 1968 and how it was subsequently applied by excluded social sectors, with particular reference to technology. The aim is to provide some observations about the adequacy of management and construction techniques requirements of selfconstruction by mutual aid within the framework of social, economic and cultural features of different populations or communities.
