Abstract

This paper contains a panoramic view of the situation of cities at three levels: World, Latin American and Peruvian. The first two deal with an exploratory summary that collects some data and statistics from several sources such as the United Nations, the World Bank and Price Waterhouse Coopers, although the main source is the biannual publication The State of the World's Cities 2012-2013 of the United Nations. Habitat. For the Peruvian level, sources from national entities were used, particularly the study that was carried out at the Ministry of Housing of Peru with a multidisciplinary team that I had the opportunity to lead. The article begins with a presentation of the new concepts, then, the study describes the urban situation in three levels:  international, Latin American and Peruvian levels. It highlights the multidimensional approach to analyze cities from the social, economic, political, government, environmental, infrastructure point of view. The rankings of cities using different criteria, not only economic. To the Peruvian case it enhances the housing and urban land in the main Peruvian cities. The paper ends with a reflection on the type of city desirable for the future and the need for studies and national statistics under the urban approaches presented here.
