This article is part of a research work sponsored by INIFAUA-UNI to study the layout and occupation of the land, the original ideas, plans, and executions of the urban development, as well as the different architectural expressions represented in the locality of San Bartolo, 50 km. south of Lima. The study places the most emphasis on the period 1930 1960, when San Bartolo was the earliest expansion southward from the modern capital, which had gradually been expanding from colonial Lima, and from the former Inca road (today Av. Paseo de la República), giving rise to the towns and later seaside resorts of Miraflores, Barranco, and Chorrillos. In that context, the article presents the characteristics of the new urbanization, and describes its different architectural expressions. Conclusions are drawn regarding the two processes, involving both the seaside resort and the working-class sector adjacent to it.
