“1964-2004: Training in the restoration of architectural monuments at the National University of Engineering...” won the researchers contest “100 years of the FAUA-UNI”. It is an exploratory study that familiarizes us with a little studied aspect in Peru: university training in the restoration of monuments. The UNI became the leader in such studies in Peruin the nineteen-sixties, when it introduced courses specializing in pro-heritage theory and intervention. This can be explained by the leadership of the professors responsible (Arq. Víctor Pimentel, Arq. José Correa), the participation of students who were committed and active in their subsequent academic and professional careers, and the development of significant agreements such as the “Inventory of the Monumental Heritage of Lima” (FAUA UNI-Ford Foundation). Important measures were the creation of the Cultural Heritage Research and Conservation Center — as a valuable but unsuccessful opportunity — and of the Master's degree course in “Restoration of Monuments” (1993) — a key multidisciplinary opportunity for promoting reflection and building the capabilities of Peru's pro-heritage personnel.
